May 2015

May 5: (Tue 7:00pm): First Tuesday Oglethorpe Firefighters Association meeting (Farm Bureau Office in Crawford).

May 7: (Thu 6:30pm): First Thursday Business Meeting.

May 14: (Thu 6:30pm): Second Thursday Training Meeting. Discussed response responsibilities and tactics, esp in terms of going directly to scene or station, eventually decided should go to station first except: two others have indicated they're headed there; and take a look at scene but only if on way or out of way by less than 1 minutes round trip. No more than 1 minute to check out scene. Also exemption for repeated false alarms from same residence over short period of time. Strongly suggested using number of fire depts called as indicator of potential seriousness.

May 16-17: (Sat/Sun): Firefighter Weekend. Charleen and Glenn left 5:30am on Saturday and returned 6:03pm on Sunday evening. Each took a 16-hour course. CF: Training Operations in Small Departments: This course is designed to provide students with some basic tools and skills to coordinate training in a small fire/EMS organization. A training function in a smaller department typically may include conducting training drills and coordinating training with a nearby larger city or state training function. Exam: Passed. GG: Principles and Practice of Command: This course will present principles and foundations for maintaining a command presence during emergency incidents. In addition, sie ujp, tactics, strategies, and effective communications will be discussed. No exam.

May 21: (Thu 6:30pm): Third Thursday Training Meeting. Thermal Imager was charged while pumper was run for 1 hour. Practiced using booster hose, PTO, and pump.

May 28: (Thu 6:30pm): Fourth Thursday Training Meeting. Chainsaw training: TM and MP went over prepping chainsaw with gas mix and oil, chain blade tightness, starting and safety measures, and fundamentals of cutting up medium diameter trees. Wolfskin Fire Party This Thursday!

It's another Wolfskin Fire Party!

I sent this Fire Party news to Ralph to post in the Echo Community Updates.

Wolfskin VFD Fire Party: Treasured Neighbors and Firefighters, Y'all come help celebrate our big $187,000 FEMA Tanker Grant, and another good year for WVFD!! Bring a side dish to share and your own beverage -- smoked turkey is on the menu. Musicians, bring instruments. All family members welcome -- and young Party Boy Paul P., you are No. 1 on the Fire Chief's dance card!!
Where/When: Thursday, December 15, 6:30 PM. Wingate Downs' Photography log cabin with the big front porch, Oak Ridge Trail, off Wolfskin Rd.

Coming from Wolfskin Fire Station at 854 Wolfskin Rd, Oak Ridge Trail is the first left going toward HWY 78.

Coming from HWY 78 down Wolfskin Rd, Oak Ridge Trail is the 5th right; and the first right after Arnolds Grove Church and Timberland Trail.

Oak Ridge Trail dead ends into Wingate's driveway; Take left branch of drive to Photography Studio (staight ahead goes to log cabin house). Park, and Party!!
Please, invite your neighbors and especially our Tanker Fund donors!!! I'll also invite some members of the press, Rescue Auxillary, selected FF in other county VFDs; Bruce Thaxton, Eddie Thaxton and Oconee No 1 Station FF. Anyone else??

I'll smoke 2 20 lb turkeys (as in, be chiefly and delegate the job to Jeff). We will need a small crew to set up Thursday afternoon, Dec 15, starting 2 pm and thereafter. Email a time you can help, if possible. Musicians sing for their supper, i.e, they do not need to fix food. I'll bring musicians' beer.

Sounds like a plan!!!! See you!!!
(No fire department funds sponsor our Fire Party.)

New Board of Directors

Four back-to-back meetings were held on December 1 2005. They were very well organized and we were finished by 8:30. Amazing!

For the first, we had more than a quorum of firefighters (Chris Peters dropped by for a few minutes, Jon Huff phoned in as he deplaned in Lousianna, and at least one other voted by phone) required to legally approve new By-Laws, and for the next year, nominate and elect a Fire Chief, an Assistant Fire Chief, and a Board of Directors.

In the second meeting, the Board elected a Treasurer and a Secretary from its members and approved two amendments to our Articles of Incorporation. The Board has firefighters Phyllis Jackson (Fire Chief), Jim Kitchens (Assistant Fire Chief), Lisa Vaughan (Secretary), Cary Fordyce (Treasurer), Ed Frey and Glenn Galau, and from the community, Pat Kellogg and John Fuller.

In the third, the Board held a monthly business meeting. In order to be a not-for-profit organization, the Board must decide all business matters, but it intends to be guided by all those who attend the meetings in the spirit, if not the letter, of how business has been conducted in the past.

And in the fourth meeting, Jim Kitchens vividly described the damage and cleanup work around Biloxi, Mississippi, where he was working as a member of the EPA.
